Clinics Can Show Up in AI Search Answers (Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT)

Short answer: AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT build their answers from web pages they can find, crawl and trust. A clinic shows up in those answers by having clear, accurate treatment pages, visible clinician expertise, a complete Google Business Profile and a website that search engines and AI crawlers are allowed to read. There is no separate trick for AI. It rewards the same strong medical SEO that already works in normal search, done more carefully.

No one can promise that an AI tool will mention your clinic. What you can do is make your website one of the easiest and safest sources for it to use. This guide explains how.

How patients are using AI search

Patients increasingly type full questions instead of short keywords. For example:

  • “Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin?”
  • “How long does recovery take after a hair transplant?”
  • “Private physiotherapy clinic near me that treats sports injuries”

Google may answer with an AI Overview at the top of the results, with links to the pages it used. ChatGPT and similar tools give a written answer and often list sources or recommend clinics. Either way, the patient sees a short list of sources before they see a normal list of websites. Being one of those sources is the new version of ranking on page one.

How AI search chooses its sources

Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews draw on pages that are already in Google’s index. Google states in its guidance on AI features and your website that there are no extra requirements to appear in them. The page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. In practice, this means your normal SEO foundations decide whether you are considered at all.

ChatGPT search

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s own crawler, called OAI-SearchBot, along with other search providers. OpenAI explains in its crawler documentation that sites which block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Many clinic websites block it by accident through security plugins or old robots.txt rules.

What both have in common

Both prefer pages that answer a question directly, are clearly written by or reviewed by qualified people, and are consistent with other trusted sources. For medical topics, they are also more cautious, because health information can affect people’s safety.

7 ways clinics can improve AI search visibility

1. Make sure AI crawlers can read your website

Check your robots.txt file and any security or firewall settings. Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot should be allowed. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does remove you from ChatGPT search. Also check that important pages are indexed in Google Search Console and submitted in Bing Webmaster Tools.

2. Answer patient questions directly on treatment pages

AI tools pull short, clear answers. Start each treatment page with a two or three sentence summary of what the treatment is, who it is for and what to expect. Then add sections that answer the real questions patients ask: cost range, recovery, risks, results and how to book. One strong page per treatment works better than several thin ones. Our guide on consolidating treatment pages explains how.

3. Show who wrote and reviewed the content

Medical content is judged on trust. Add the name, role and registration of the clinician who reviewed each page, for example their GMC, GDC, NMC or HCPC registration where it applies, and a “last reviewed” date. Build a proper profile page for each clinician. See our guides on doctor profile pages and the medical SEO content review process.

4. Keep a clear website structure

AI tools understand a site faster when services, clinicians and locations each have their own page and link to each other logically. A treatment page should link to the clinicians who perform it and the locations that offer it. Our article on website structure for services, clinicians and locations shows a simple layout.

5. Complete your Google Business Profile

For “near me” questions, AI answers lean heavily on local data. Make sure your clinic name, address, phone number, opening hours, categories and services are complete and match your website exactly. Here is what a clinic Google Business Profile should include.

6. Earn genuine patient reviews

Reviews are one of the signals AI tools use when recommending local providers. Ask every suitable patient, reply to reviews professionally and never offer incentives. Our guide to patient reviews for clinic SEO covers how to do this within the rules.

7. Add structured data

Schema markup helps machines read your pages. Use MedicalClinic or a more specific type for your clinic, Physician for clinician profiles, and FAQ markup only where questions are genuinely shown on the page. Keep the details identical to your Google Business Profile.

What does not help

  • Writing for robots. Stuffing pages with phrases like “best clinic AI” does nothing.
  • Mass AI generated content. Unreviewed medical content is a risk to patients and to your reputation, and it is the type of content AI tools are most careful about.
  • Exaggerated claims. Words like “guaranteed results” or “pain free” break UK advertising rules and make your pages less trustworthy as a source. The ASA advertising codes apply to clinic websites too.
  • Paying for “AI ranking” promises. No one can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will mention your clinic.

How to check if your clinic appears in AI answers

  1. Write down ten questions patients ask before booking with you.
  2. Search them in Google and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links to.
  3. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT with search turned on and note the sources.
  4. Repeat every month or two and compare.

If competitors are cited and you are not, compare their pages with yours. Usually the difference is clearer answers, visible clinician details or better local information. A medical clinic SEO audit can show exactly where the gaps are, and our guide on measuring SEO against patient demand explains how to track progress in enquiries rather than rankings alone.

The bottom line

AI search does not replace medical SEO. It raises the standard. Clinics with accurate, clinician reviewed pages, a clear site structure, a complete Google Business Profile and genuine reviews are the ones AI tools can safely use as sources. Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers?

No. Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Your website has to earn its place as a trusted source through quality content and strong SEO foundations.

Do I need special content for AI search?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews. Clear, accurate pages that answer patient questions well serve both normal search and AI search.

Should I block AI crawlers from my clinic website?

If you block OAI-SearchBot, your clinic cannot appear in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking Google-Extended does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews. Decide based on where you want to be visible.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

There is no clear evidence that major AI search tools rely on llms.txt today. Focus on crawl access, content quality and local information first.
